verenike

Verenike (also spelled vareniki) are large dumplings filled with cottage cheese, traditionally served with a ham gravy or cream sauce, a dish the Low German Mennonites carried from Ukraine to central Kansas. Volunteers make tens of thousands of them each year for events like the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale. The word and dish are distinctive to Kansas's Mennonite communities.
