pirogue

A small flat-bottomed boat used to navigate the bayous and marshes of southern Louisiana. The word comes into Cajun French via Caribbean Spanish from a Carib (Indigenous) source, and the boat itself is iconic enough that 'load the pirogue' is shorthand for going out into the swamp.
