In Nebraska 'detasseling' refers to the seasonal summer work, famously a teenager's first job, of walking seed-corn rows in the heat to pull the pollen-bearing tassels from the plants. It is a shared rural rite of passage spoken of with both pride and dread. The practice and the slang are concentrated in the seed-corn belt of Nebraska and neighboring states.
