Originally a put-down for a rough rural Vermonter who 'chucked wood' and heated with it, the term flipped in the 1960s and '70s as out-of-staters poured in. Today 'I'm a woodchuck' bumper stickers signal pride in being born in-state, with deep family roots and a wood-stove sensibility. Distinct from the rodent of the same name and unrelated to the cider brand.
