skid road

A skid road was originally a track of greased cross-logs down which felled timber was skidded to the water or mill, a sense rooted in Northwest logging. In Seattle the name attached to a specific downtown street and came to mean a run-down district frequented by loggers and transients; the national term 'skid row' descends from this Pacific Northwest usage.
