Prairie maggots

A dismissive ranch term for sheep, also given as 'meadow maggots,' reflecting the old cattle-rancher disdain for woolly stock that crops grass to the dirt. It survives as colorful working-ranch slang across Montana's plains. The phrasing is cattlemen's humor more than literal description.
