Pepperoni roll

A soft white yeast-bread roll baked with pepperoni inside, so the spicy fat melts into the dough. It was invented in 1927 by Italian immigrant Giuseppe 'Joseph' Argiro at the Country Club Bakery in Fairmont, West Virginia, as a portable, shelf-stable lunch for coal miners. The pepperoni roll is the only food considered truly native to West Virginia and has been called the official state food; you will find them at every gas station and bakery from Wheeling to Beckley.
