Derby pie

First baked in 1954 at the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky by the Kern family, who federally trademarked the name 'Derby-Pie' and have aggressively defended it in court for decades. Because of the trademark, knockoffs around Louisville and the Kentucky Derby Festival are sold under names like 'May Day pie' or 'chocolate walnut pie'. The pie itself is a Kentucky Derby tradition.
